Oriental Giant Squirrels, belonging to the genus R Oriental Giant Squirrels, belonging to the genus Ratufa, are an impressive group of large tree squirrels found across Asia. This genus includes four species: the Malabar or Indian Giant Squirrel (Ratufa indica), Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura), Black Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor) and Sunda or Cream-coloured Giant Squirrel (Ratufa affinis). Known for their vibrant colors and impressive size, these squirrels play a crucial role in their ecosystems, particularly in seed dispersal.

The Malabar Giant Squirrel, also known as the Indian Giant Squirrel, is a stunning creature with a rich palette of colors ranging from deep browns to vibrant reds and purples. If you want to see one in the wild, head to Silent Valley National Park (Kerala, India), Periyar National Park (Kerala, India) or Bandipur National Park (Karnataka, India) where they are regularly encountered.

Malabar Giant Squirrels prefer tropical evergreen forests as well as moist deciduous forests, often nesting high in the trees. They build spherical nests called dreys using leaves and twigs, typically located in the upper canopy to avoid predators.

Since they spend most of their time in trees, keep your eyes on the canopy and look for movement.

Have you ever noticed how some birds blend seamles Have you ever noticed how some birds blend seamlessly into their surroundings? Camouflage is a vital survival strategy for many bird species, helping them avoid predators and increase their chances of survival.

There are several fascinating types of camouflage that birds use to stay safe and thrive in their habitats. Concealing colouration allows birds like the Rock Ptarmigan to match the colours and patterns of their surroundings, making them nearly invisible to predators and prey alike. Disruptive colouration, also seen in species like the Ptarmigan, involves bold patterns or contrasting colours that break up the bird’s outline, making it difficult for predators to spot them amidst foliage or rocks.
