The world's smallest monkey, the Pygmy Marmoset, r The world's smallest monkey, the Pygmy Marmoset, resides high in the rainforest canopy of South America.

Pygmy Marmosets depend on their climbing ability to access their preferred food, tree gum. They effortlessly move up and down trees and thick vines headfirst, using their sharp lower teeth to create a hole in the bark or vine with an up-and-down sawing motion. The sap that pools up in the hole is then lapped up by the marmosets with their tongue.

These primates have a set of specific trees they prefer within their territory and can create up to 1 300 holes in each tree! Apart from sap, Pygmy Marmosets also feed on insects, particularly butterflies that frequent the sap holes, as well as nectar and fruit.

It is a bird of marshes, lakes, rivers and other wetland areas.

In spring, Grey Herons breed in colonies called "heronries," which may be located in trees. A clutch of three to five bluish-green eggs is laid and both adults incubate them for 25 days. Once the chicks hatch from their eggs, both adults feed them for about 7 weeks until they fledge. If a juvenile survives its first winter, it can expect to live for about 5 years.
